Goods can be transported by different modes of transport: sea, air, rail or road. Road freight transport remains the most popular method of cargo delivery worldwide.
Road freight is divided into two main types — groupage (LTL) and full truckload (FTL). Each has its own specifics. Below we cover the details of full truckload road freight transportation.
What is Full Truckload (FTL) Road Freight Transport
Full truckload (FTL) road freight transport is a delivery method where the cargo occupies the entire space of the truck and is delivered to a single recipient. For large shipments, one or several vehicles can be used.
This delivery method is universal: TRASKO trucks can carry cargo of different weight, dimensions, hazard class and storage requirements.
Advantages of Full Truckload Road Freight Transportation
FTL road freight is not suitable for everyone. If you have a small shipment, we recommend considering groupage cargo delivery. However, full truckload road freight transportation has serious advantages:
- Convenience. The vehicle is entirely dedicated to one client. This makes it easier to control the transportation process, make adjustments and specific requests.
- Door-to-door delivery. Cargo is loaded at the sender's warehouse and delivered directly to the recipient's warehouse.
- Speed. Road freight transport is carried out via the most efficient route. The truck does not stop at other warehouses or spend time loading and unloading other clients' cargo. This significantly reduces delivery time.
- Cost efficiency. The cost of road freight transport is significantly lower than some other delivery methods, for example air freight. TRASKO managers will help calculate the optimal price for your route.
Stages of Full Truckload Road Freight
-
Preparation for shipment.
This stage includes measuring and weighing the cargo, selecting packaging, packing and labelling, choosing a suitable vehicle for road freight transport, measuring and weighing the packed cargo, as well as preparing documents and arranging insurance. Most of these tasks are handled by the sender. However, part of the work — selecting a vehicle based on cargo dimensions and weight, additional labelling, document preparation — can be delegated to a freight forwarding company. TRASKO managers will be happy to help with the shipment process and answer any questions. -
Loading at the sender's warehouse.
Usually carried out by the sender. The truck driver monitors the loading process, checks the cargo distribution in the trailer, and verifies the strength and correctness of securing the declared cargo units. Any issues identified during loading are recorded by the driver in a special waybill, which is signed by the sender. -
Transportation.
The delivery is fully controlled by the road freight transport company. If any difficulties arise or changes need to be made during transit, all issues are handled by the freight forwarder. The company also monitors the movement of the vehicle and keeps the client informed. You can also track your cargo at any time on our website. -
Handover to the recipient.
At this stage the driver signs the waybill confirming cargo delivery, and the recipient also signs. The driver does not participate in unloading unless this is agreed in advance in the contract.
Cost and Transit Times
The cost and transit times of road freight transport depend on a number of factors:
- type and volume of cargo;
- distance between pickup and delivery points;
- additional services (packaging and labelling, preparation of accompanying documents, insurance, etc.).
